Thursday, January 23, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Deschutes County Services Building, DeArmond Conference Room, 1300 Wall Street, Bend, OR 97701 (See map and detailed directions below)
Readers expect to be immersed in the story worlds they read about. They want to see it, smell it, touch it, hear it and sometimes even taste it. In this workshop, we'll get down to the nitty-gritty of how good description can elevate the quality of your writing while bringing your story to life.
- Ditch adverbs and adjectives
- Learn how to see with the mind’s eye
- Use memory triggers
- Be cinematic when needed, otherwise leave the camera at home
- Use similes and metaphors effectively.

Open to the community. Free. Light refreshments.
Driving from the north, take Hwy 97 S (Bend Parkway) to the Lafayette Street exit. The building is just off the Bend Parkway. Drive to Wall Street and turn right, then enter from the driveway just past Pacific Park. Drive around the building and use the parking lot north of the building. The DeArmond Room is off the west side of the building on the same side as the main building entrance.
There is no Parkway exit coming from the south, so just follow Wall Street past Lafayette Avenue. If you’re unfamiliar with Bend, to avoid the downtown area and get to the County building, take the Parkway north to Revere Avenue (Exit 137). Turn left at the light onto Revere Avenue, then left at the 3rd cross street onto Wall Street. Make a left turn onto Norton Avenue and then right into the parking lot (drive south to the front of the County building for parking).
